A New Perspective for a New Year

positive change

By most all accounts, last year was not a good one. The expectation of most everyone is that this year will be better. They hope for more positive outcome in the new year. Yet the only thing that’s changed from last year to this year is that we moved the date from December 31 to January 1. Though the year incremented, little else has changed.

Yet we don’t need to endure a repeat of last year. We can move forward to make this year better. This year holds the potential to be your best year yet. Read on to discover how.

Don’t Focus on What You Can’t Control

First, we must stop fixating our attention on what is beyond our ability to influence. We’re surrounded by too many big problems. These are insurmountable issues over which we have no control. Instead of letting these events paralyze us and immobilize us into inaction, we should do our best to shove them aside and not let them preoccupy our day-to-day, minute-to-minute reality.

Not thinking about them won’t make them go away but doing so will decrease the hold they have on our perspectives and their lives. Quite simply, what we think about forms our perspectives and influences our perceptions of reality. We should think about what is good, not what is bad.

What Can You Control?

Yes, we must be aware of what’s going on in our world and not separate ourselves to exist in isolation, but, at the same time, we’ll do well to recognize that the negativity which surrounds us need not form our existence.

Don’t let events that reside outside of our ability to influence preoccupy our thoughts and drag us down. Instead look at the things within our control. This is where we can guide ourselves into a better tomorrow—and a better year.

We can start this initiative by listing what we can control. From this list we can determine what to influence to produce constructive transformation. Many significant concerns exist within the healthcare community. We can’t fix them all, but we can address items in our office that affect our staff and patients.

Look to Make Positive Changes

When we focus our attention on what we can control, we’ve taken the first step to bring about positive changes in our lives, at our work, and for the people we interact with. This includes all: those we work with, those we serve, and those we live with.

In this way we can become a welcome beacon to those around us. We can provide a path to a better tomorrow. We can’t make everything better, but we can improve some things. Even correcting one item will help make the world, and our reality, a better place.

Conclusion

Look for the things within your circle of influence, those things you can control. Then set about making positive changes.
